Tips and Advice for Posing (Before The Shoot)
Photoshoots can feel a bit intimidating, especially if you're unsure how to pose.
I work closely with my clients to help them feel comfortable and confident, finding the right poses for the perfect shots, however I do understand things can be less intimidating if you have an idea of what to do going into it.
Below you'll find my top tips for posing which will help you feel comfortable and confident going into our photo session together!
- Weight Distribution/Shifting Your Weight:
- Avoid standing stiffly with your weight evenly distributed on both feet. Instead, shift your weight onto one leg or the other to create a more dynamic and natural posture.
- Find the side that is most comfortable to put weight on. Everyone has a more natural side they tend to gravitate towards. This side is going to look and feel more natural to lean into.
- Creating an S Shape for a Feminine Look:
- Popping your hip: Shift your hip slightly outward or backward (away from the camera) to create a curve in your body.
- Turning one knee into the other: When standing, place one foot slightly in front of the other and bend the knee of the leg closest to the camera. This creates a natural curve in your lower body.
- Bending Elbows to Avoid a Boxy Look:
- Keep a gentle bend in your elbows rather than letting your arms hang straight down at your sides. This helps to create angles and adds elegance to your pose.
- Shoulders Down:
- Relax your shoulders and avoid tensing them up toward your ears. Dropping your shoulders slightly will create a more relaxed and natural look as well as elongate your neck.
- This might feel slightly unnatural but it looks great in photos! Practice in a mirror if you feel funny, so you can see the positive difference it makes!
- Tongue on Roof of Mouth:
- This technique helps define the jawline and prevents the tongue from pushing against the back of your teeth, which can affect facial expressions.
Pose Examples:
- Full Body Pose:
- Stand with one leg slightly in front of the other.
- Shift your weight onto your back leg.
- Pop your hip out slightly away from the camera.
- Bend the elbow of the arm closest to the camera.
- Shoulders relaxed and down.
- Tongue lightly touching the roof of your mouth.
- Smile gently or maintain a relaxed expression.
- Upper Body Pose:
- Cross one leg slightly in front of the other.
- Shift your weight onto your back leg.
- Pop your hip out slightly.
- Bend the elbow of the arm closest to the camera.
- Shoulders relaxed and down.
- Tongue lightly touching the roof of your mouth.
- Look towards the camera with a soft gaze or turn slightly away for a profile shot.
Additional Tips:
- Facial Expression:
- Experiment with different expressions, from a natural smile to a more serious or contemplative look.
- Relax your face between shots to avoid tension.
- Laugh! Laughing shots are a great way to capture a fun, happy expression that looks natural.
- Hand Placement:
- Avoid letting your hands hang straight down at your sides.
- Place one hand on your hip, lightly touching your hair, or gently touching your face.
- Keep fingers slightly curled rather than fully extended.
- Posture:
- Maintain good posture throughout the shoot.
- Lengthen your neck and keep your chin slightly lifted for a flattering angle.
Practice Makes Perfect:
Take time to practice these poses in front of a mirror or with a friend to feel more comfortable and natural during the photoshoot. Remember, confidence and relaxation are key to capturing great photographs.
Ultimately, I will work with you on poses that best suit you, your style, and the vibe you are aiming for. If you forget all these tips, don't worry! I will remind you during the shoot and help you feel comfortable and confident and capture your unique and authentic self in natural looking poses!
